What is Marianne’s background and how did she come to join us?

Marianne. She has been a dedicated employment lawyer since 2015 when she qualified as a solicitor. Having practised in no other area since then, she has gained a great deal of experience acting for many happy clients, employers and employees alike. Marianne joined the firm from another specialist employment law firm.

Marianne is an employment lawyer through and through, but before she took up this specialism she worked for the CAB and also as an accredited immigration case worker for Refugee and Migrant Justice. This gave her invaluable experience which she is able to bring to bear on her employment practice, not only in handling difficult cases with strict time limits, but also being an advocate at hearings. This experience, plus her many years of employment law knowledge makes Marianne a real asset to the firm and her clients.

What does Marianne do day to day?

Marianne assists many clients, employers and employees alike, with their workplace issues and problems. A typical day may see her negotiating restrictive covenants against an ex-employer, bringing Employment Tribunal claims and responding to them, helping employees raise grievances, managing redundancies for employees and employers (including appeals). You will also find Marianne drafting disciplinary and grievance procedures, post-termination restrictions, contracts of employment and employee handbooks.

Marianne also very frequently helps with unfair dismissal cases, managing redundancies, handling long-term sickness absence issues, discrimination claims of all types and whistle-blowing cases. She is also kept busy negotiating settlement agreements on a very regular basis, something she is frequently praised for by her clients.

Marianne is sociable and you will often see her at networking events. This makes her the perfect person to help with business development and spreading the word to new clients.

Career highlights

Marianne is proud of the high value settlements she negotiates for employees, several of which have been over £100,000 in value. She has also successfully acted for senior employees in cases against large and well financed employers (including against one of the ‘Big 4’ accountancy firms).

Another career highlight has been a case won whilst representing an employer client in a particularly complex and voluminous Employment Tribunal case concerning a redundancy. She frequently uses the experience gained in this case to the advantage both employer and employee clients finding themselves in difficult redundancy situations.

What does Marianne love most about her job?

The values that are dearest to Marianne’s heart are openness, honesty and integrity. She is proud that, when you instruct her, you will get an exceptionally professional service, with transparency about your case, your prospects and your costs at its heart.

She also likes to get a good outcome from difficult situations. This means that she especially enjoys situations where she is fighting for difficult cases, or resolving seemingly intractable issues and problems.

And last but not least, Marianne loves the intellectual challenge of employment law, and keeping up to date with the latest developments, which come around on an almost daily basis.

Outside work

When Marianne isn’t working for her clients or making sure she is up to date with the law, you will find her taking long walks by the sea (where she lives) and keeping up with Pilates. She is also a cat lover.

And it may come as no surprise as someone who thrives on legal challenges that Marianne loves ‘escape room’ challenges!
