What is Louise’s background and how did she come to join us?

Louise qualified as a solicitor in 2000 and brings to her clients the benefit of very many years of expertise as a specialist employment lawyer. Before coming to the firm (many years ago now; she was one of our first employees) Louise cut her teeth with positions as an employment law specialist with national law firms Shoosmiths, and on the helplines of Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and the Engineering Employers Federation (EEF) and other specialist employment law firms.

Louise’s passion to specialise in employment law started whilst working as a junior solicitor for a boutique corporate law firm in Mayfair, when she was asked to advise on employment matters including business sales and a tribunal hearing.  This led to her providing evening advice about employment law at a charitable law centre.

What does Louise do day to day?

Louise has a busy practice and works in a highly focused way, acting for many employers and employees in disputes arising during employment and after termination. She works on the full range of employment law issues, delivering results and value for her clients. Louise has acted for almost 2,000 clients since joining Springhouse.

Louise regularly negotiates high value settlements for her employee clients and have been as high as £750,000. She is also focused on less contentious matters, where she has a great deal of expertise with drafting employment contract and staff handbook drafting. She is also well versed in all issues surrounding TUPE business transfers.

Louise regularly acts for clients who have legal expenses insurance and has a great deal of expertise in managing these cases so that clients get maximum pay-outs from insurers.

A typical day will also see Louise managing tribunal cases and advising employees and employers alike about unfair and constructive dismissal, disciplinary and grievance issues, all types of discrimination, redundancy, sickness and absence, bullying and harassment, and whistleblowing.

Louise’s top professional achievements

Louise’s £750,000 settlement obviously sits high on her list of achievements. However, she is also very proud of a case she won for a client which was reported by employment law journals because it held that psychiatric injury awards (in this case for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) could be made in whistleblowing cases. The Employment Judge in this case agreed with Louise on this point and made an award of £75,000 compensation.

Louise is also proud of the insurance backed claims where the insurer has initially taken the position that they will not provide cover, but she has provided a second opinion leading to the client subsequently receiving cover.

Around 90% of Louise’s cases settle on favourable terms without the high cost of going to Tribunal. Some cases do need to go to Tribunal, however, and in these cases her success rate is again around 95%.

Being passionate about the intricacies of employment law makes Louise the ideal person to be responsible for professional training within the firm and making sure our solicitors are well-skilled and up to date with the law.

What Louise loves most about her job

Louise loves the intellectual challenge of employment law, which can be complicated and is ever-changing. She loves putting that knowledge to practical use for her clients; Louise is driven to win and to get the best possible results.

She is proud of her meticulous approach, her doggedness and tough yet reasonable negotiating style. These attributes have resulted in great results for so many clients.

Outside work

Louise likes to play and follow tennis especially in the sun and is a regular attendee at Wimbledon and Eastbourne where she is fortunate to have seen some of the greats at close quarters.

She is a keen walker and undertakes long walks and other fundraising initiatives to raise money for charity, usually the RSPCA and a small specialist animal charity as she is an animal lover and rescuer.

And finally, as someone who prides herself on her analytical approach and success for her clients, it will come as no surprise that Louise is a keen participant in murder mystery events.
