In the Queen’s speech, the government has given us a flavour of likely upcoming changes to employment law. We await the details, but here’s where we can expect the changes to be:

  • Minimum wage: penalties are likely to be increased to £20,000 per employee.
  • Zero hours contracts: the government would like to crack down on abuse. Speculation on Twitter suggests that this may be limited to a right to request not to work under zero hours contracts.
  • Employment Tribunals: there will be a crackdown on delays. No details given.
  • Childcare Regulations: more changes on the way to meet the needs of working families.
  • New “Heroism” bill: we await the details of this with particular interest, and it seems that small employers will be in line to benefit, although we can’t imagine how this will work.
  • Apprenticeships: these will be overhauled to be more responsive to the needs to employers, with an ambition of 2 million more apprenticeship starts before the general election.
