A Tribunal has recently recognised that spiritualist beliefs, including the belief in psychic and paranormal powers, are protected by anti-discrimination legislation relating to religion and belief.

Mr Power was dismissed by Greater Manchester Police partly because he distributed spiritualist DVDs and posters at work, and they saw this as inappropriate. Mr Power brought a discrimination claim, alleging that he had been dismissed on the grounds of his spiritualist beliefs.

The Appeal Tribunal held that he had not, and followed a number of recent cases in coming to the view that he had been dismissed for the manifestation of his religious beliefs, not because of those beliefs per se. Read the decision here.

This would usually amount to indirect discrimination nonetheless (which the employer would have to justify) but the point was not raised in this case.
