Following the UK’s silver workforce gaining the right to request flexible working last summer (recap here), a Government poll just published shows that 39% of over 50s not currently retired said that working part time or flexible hours before stopping work altogether would be the best way to retire.
More than 1/3 of retirees say their advice to others would be to consider switching to flexible or part time work for a period first before stopping work altogether.
The Government will be launching a new guidance toolkit for employers to help them support older staff in the workplace, such as making changes to working patterns or finding alternative roles for those with age–related health difficulties.
Implications for employers
Employers able to demonstrate that they have been mindful of the new toolkit when considering flexible working requests from older workers are likely to be viewed positively by Employment Tribunals in claims for age or disability discrimination.
