Changes to Employment Law in June 2013.

The first in a long list of changes to employment laws come into effect on 25th June 2013.

Alongside some technical provisions, the following are of most interest:

  • Removal of qualifying period of employment where an employee claims that they have been dismissed on grounds of their political opinions or beliefs
  • Requirement that a whistle-blowing disclosure has been made in the public interest before it qualifies for protection against dismissal or detriment
  • Power to reduce compensation in a whistle-blowing claim if it is found that the protected disclosure has not been made in good faith.

Further changes are due in the Summer and Autumn, including changes to compensation for unfair dismissal and the rules relating to compromise agreements and the discussions leading up to them.
